Youth Focus Group: Nurturing Opportunities for South Bruce Peninsula's Youth

In 1994, a beacon of hope emerged for the youth of South Bruce Peninsula when the Youth Focus Group came into existence as a community interest group. Initially situated at the Public School on Berford St, the group embarked on a mission to create opportunities for local youngsters in a town where such prospects were scarce.

Their journey was marked by dedication and determination, leading to the initiation of day trips to various destinations, the organization of March Break programs, and the eventual establishment and operation of a vibrant Youth Centre. However, none of these achievements would have been possible without the unwavering support of the Wiarton Propeller Club.

In 1996, recognizing the potential for greater impact, the Youth Focus Group approached the Propeller Club. The club's members wholeheartedly welcomed them, absorbing the Youth Focus Group as a not-for-profit organization under their umbrella. This strategic move allowed them to access essential grant funding, making a multitude of youth-oriented programs a reality.

Throughout the years, the Youth Focus Group orchestrated countless adventures for young hearts, ranging from thrilling trips to Laser Quest and Wonderland to engaging activities at the Outdoor Ed Centre. They facilitated movie outings, roller skating excursions, snow tubing escapades, and even opportunities for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.

The Youth Centre, which operated in the old Tom Norris school bus terminal for several years, served as a bustling hub where young minds congregated, fostering a sense of community among the youth.

Today, the Youth Focus Group remains committed to providing low to no-cost activities on PA days and diligently seeks fresh opportunities to enrich the lives of the young people of South Bruce Peninsula. Their tireless efforts continue to illuminate a path of promise and growth for the youth in their community.
